“Israel has not been at the top of the Jewish agenda for years. In the last presidential election it ranked eighth out of 15 issues, behind health-care, gasoline prices, energy, taxes and education” writes Doug Bloomfield. The JPost Bio of him says “He spent nine years as the legislative director and chief lobbyist for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).”
Indeed, a Siena poll days before the NY9 vote found that only six percent, in a district where Jews are 31%, said Israel is the most important issue to them. The poll results were in-line with a YWN op-ed I wrote three months before the NY9 vote (when Weiner was still in office and when no one spoke about the GOP taking the seat), that Orthodox Jews will be the key for the GOP to win the seat, but the focus can’t be largely Israel because most Jews have other priorities when given the opion to pick one issue.
