Outside Op-Ed: Jewish Winners and Losers of Thursday’s Elections

Congratulations to Senator Martin Dilan and Assemblyman Raphael Espinal on their resounding reelections. This is just the appetizer because 2013 has all the city-wide and council seats up for grabs.

I am attaching a Winners/Losers column that a long-time political activist wrote and that is the reason why I have also included my Jewish scholarly list to this email. he has requested anonymity.

Winners

Rabbi Niederman - Despite what happens with the paper (and it does not look good for Lincoln Restler) this race would have been a yawn if not for Niederman pulling out thousands of chasidcs for the polish guy. Depending on how the final council lines are drawn, this can set up the mother of all battles next year if Restler challenges Levin.

David Greenfield - In the first race where he was clearly front and center, Greenfield really flexed his political muscle by going all out and delivering victory for Mostofsky.

Sephardic Community - I have not seen the final numbers where the votes came out of but the Sephardic federation sticking with Cymbrowitz may have prevented a United orthodox front for Akslelrod and put Steve over the top.

Simcha Felder - Can still bring it on, as evidenced by his nice turnout numbers and margin of victory. Storobin should be concerned as there seemed to be no evidence of anti-Felder sentiment.

Joel Schnur - Despite much pessimism regarding Rhoda Jacobs, including from yours truly, Mr. Schnur remained resolute sticking with Rhoda and being rewarded with her delivering a good old fashioned licking- And of course Joel got to enjoy seeing his pal James Sanders heading to Albany. But Joel, I’m sure your biggest thrill of the night was the egg on the Aroni faces as Lincoln Restler apparently went down.

Losers

Dov Hikind - Despite his own resounding win, Dov once again showed that he can’t deliver votes for anyone other than himself as his hand picked candidate Charles Finkelstein went down badly.

The Williamsburg Aronim - Despite all their posturing and Moshe Indig’s boasts in June, they were clearly outhustled and out muscled by the Zalis yesterday.

The Flatbush Rabbonim - Despite their Kol Korah’s for Ben Akselrod, they showed they have no power to pull votes as a dismal turnout prevented Ben from prevailing in what was a winnable race.

Rabbi Ralbag - he was the one who first promoted Rodneyse Bichotte. At the end she turned out to be the same farce that all previous challengers to Rhoda were. I now think Rhoda will be able to go out on her own terms whenever she is ready.
