Capital NY Reports: In the latest edition of the Queens Jewish Link, a biweekly newspaper, for Republican congressional candidate Dan Halloran, playing to the fear that President Obama will create an independent Palestinian state, which could then bar Jews from parts of Jerusalem.
The ad says:
“President Obama has a real chance of winning reelection. He will attempt to create a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. The last time Arabs controlled Yerushalayim Jews were not allowed access to the kosel.”
(The “kosel” refers to the Western Wall.)
Halloran, a City Councilman from Bayside, is running for the newly drawn 6th congressional district, against Democratic Assemblywoman Grace Meng.
Halloran recently visited Israel and later, held a fund-raiser at the headquarters of another local Jewish newspaper, the 5 Towns Jewish Times.
The Jewish voting bloc in the district is significant, and could be up for grabs.
Although a portion of the district was represented at various times by Democrats hawkish on Israel, like Reps. Anthony Weiner and Gary Ackerman, a large number of Jewish voters supported Republican Bob Turner’s successful bid over David Weprin, an Orthodox Jew who was a strong supporter of Israel and visited the country eight times.
Turner was boosted by former Mayor Ed Koch, who said electing him would send a message to the White House that Obama wasn’t being sufficiently supportive of Israel.
Democrats weathered a minor uproar during the Democratic National Convention last month when the party’s draft platform did not include language supportive of keeping Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. With help from Senator Chuck Schumer, the language was re-inserted, following a closely divided voice vote on the floor of the convention.
