Ex-Gov Spitzer Must Face Ex-AIG CEO in Defamation Suit

Eliot SpitzerFormer American International Group Inc. CEO Maurice Greenberg defeated an effort by disgraced former New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer to discard a lawsuit in which he was accused of making defamatory statements in a campaign to damage Greenberg’s reputation.

The 89-year-old Greenberg sued Spitzer, 55, in New York State Supreme Court in Putnam County last year seeking unspecified damages due to statements Spitzer made to media outlets in 2012 accusing the former business executive of fraud.

The statements “are part of a long-standing malicious campaign by Mr. Spitzer, through the publication of false and defamatory statements, to discredit Mr. Greenberg and damage Mr. Greenberg’s reputation and career, while attempting to bolster Mr. Spitzer’s own reputation and career,” Greenberg — generally regarded as the most-connected business executive in New York, stated in his complaint. On Wednesday, New York State Supreme Court Justice Lewis Lubell said the case may move forward to trial, after he granted a request by Spitzer to dismiss some of his statements from the case.
