The Young Men and Young Women’s Hebrew Association of Washington Heights and Inwood brought in Seattle Mariners star Nelson Cruz last week to talk to neighborhood middle school students.

The visit is part of the YM & YWHA’s School’s Out New York City Program, which “aims to foster deep partnerships between faculty, families, and students in order to enhance student character, leadership qualities, and creativity,” according to the SONYC website.

Cruz, who was born in Monte Cristi in the Dominican Republican, was a natural choice of speaker for the students at Harbor Heights Middle School, which has a predominately Dominican immigrant population. Cruz also has a pronounced interest in working with children, having established the Broomstick23 Foundation to use sports and education to improve young lives.
