On Sunday, an armed man entered the Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington D.C. and opened fire with an AR-15 assault rifle. He was inspired by false viral stories alleging that Hillary Clinton used a Washington D.C. pizzeria to run a child abuse ring, a conspiracy referred to as “Pizzagate.”
Now, Pizzagate has claimed another restaurant, this one much more local, DNA Info.com reports: Roberta’s Pizza in Williamsburg.
“We know from the get-go this could be more serious than the average call,” Deputy Inspector and 90th Precinct head William Gardner told the website. “My guys know about it. They’re giving it special attention.”
On Dec.1, an employee at the restaurant received a phone call threatening that she was going to “bleed and be tortured.” The restaurant also received calls inquiring about connections to the imaginary scandal.
Proponents of the theory tried to bolster their claims by pointing out that Bill and Hillary Clinton ate at Roberta’s in 2012 and cited some supposedly occult imagery on the restaurant’s social media pages.
To express solidarity with the restaurant, Twitter users began sharing the hashtag #I’mwithRobertas, with one user saying she planned to order twelve pizzas from the restaurant out of “spite/solidarity.”
Clinton herself criticized Thursday the “epidemic” of fake news which has “flooded social media over the past year,” calling it a danger that the nation needed to address.
