Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement today showing his support for Rep. Keith Ellison as he runs for leadership of the Democratic National Committee. In doing so, de Blasio joins other noted progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren who believe the Minnesota congressman is the right man to help the country’s opposition party fight against the agenda of the Republican majority.
“At this critical threshold, Keith Ellison is the leader we need to defend our principles, move the party forward and begin to take our country back from a dangerous right-wing agenda,” de Blasio said.
Ellison also has the support of more entrenched or mainstream figures in the Democratic party, including both outgoing Minority Leader Harry Reid and incoming Leader Charles Schumer.
All this means that Ellison’s closest rival, Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, has his work cut out for him if he hopes to best Ellison when the position comes to a vote in late February. Still, Ellison does have his opponents, most prominently those in the Jewish community.
