A note to a Jewish customer reading “greetings from Adolf Hitler” has led to the firing of an Amazon employee, the Daily Mail reported Monday. The employee reportedly left the note inside a package containing a toy ordered by the customer for her niece.
The employee may have identified the woman as Jewish through her last name. A friend of the woman, who requested to remain anonymous, said his friend is “a very gentle and humble lady” and was “shaking” when she described the letter.
“She does a lot for charity – both Jewish and non-Jewish – and helps all members of the community, that’s why she took it very bad,” the friend explained.
The friend added that police arrived within twenty minutes after the incident was reported and confiscated the toy, note, and packaging for forensic testing.
According to the friend, police took the incident “very seriously, we’re very happy about how they’ve handled it,” though he found Amazon’s response less than satisfactory, claiming the company did not respond despite being contacted on the same day.
According to Daily Mail, a spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews described the anti-Semitic message as “cruel” and said it “must have been very distressing for the woman concerned.”
