The first 12 days of the Trump administration have not been short on political strife, and apparently all the tension has been taking their toll on Jared Kushner, Trump’s adviser and son-in-law. Emily Jane Fox reports that Kushner has lost 7 pounds since Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 as he fights what has, so far, been a losing power struggle with another Trump adviser, Steve Bannon.
Kushner’s big accomplishment should have come last week, when he brokered a meeting between his father-in-law and President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico. After he spent 24 hours convincing Nieto to meet with the famously hostile U.S. president, Trump changed his mind and publicly nuked a meeting with the Mexican chief, tweeting “If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.”
Said a source close to Kushner: “I’d never once heard him say he was angry throughout the entire campaign. But [now] he was furious.”
Meanwhile, Trump insists on making controversy on Shabbat, when Kushner, who is an Orthodox Jew, cannot work. The Saturday after the Inauguration saw Trump doubling-down on claims that his crowd Friday was bigger than Pres. Barack Obama’s, but that was nothing compared to this past weekend: Trump’s executive action banning refugees was just becoming public as Kushner and his family prepared for their day of rest. By the time night fell on Saturday, there were mass protests at airports across the country. Perhaps that explains the glamorous photo Kushner’s wife, Ivanka Trump, posted as they prepared for a night out–the couple didn’t realize how ill-timed designer gowns and tuxedos would be since they didn’t realize how much the country had changed just since they lit their Shabbos candle.
Kushner’s body has even shown the effects of all this stress, with Fox reporting that Kushner has become pale and lost 7 pounds just since Inauguration Day.
Meanwhile, Steve Bannon’s power in the White House just continues to grow.
