Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on Republicans to stand up to President Donald Trump in the aftermath of Trump’s firing of F.B.I. Director James Comey. “Where is the Howard Baker of 2017?” Schumer asked, referring to the late Republican senator who was vigorously critical of Nixon during the Watergate scandal. (Baker famously asked the investigation’s crucial question: “What did the President know and when did he know it?”)
The fact that Democrats are still hoping for Republican help, even though Trump’s entire election proves that 21st century politicians will never cross party lines, indicates that either their options or their imaginations are quite small.
