The resolution, S. Res. 65, also includes a statement of support for Israel if that nation decides to act against Iran.

The resolution states that the U.S. should support Israel “in accordance with United States law and the constitutional responsibility of Congress to authorize the use of military force” if Israel “is compelled to take military action in legitimate self-defense against Iran’s nuclear weapons program.”

Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez said during floor debate that the resolution would send two messages. One message, the New Jersey Democrat said, is “Israel, we continue to be your faithful ally.”

The other message, he said, is to Iran. “We cannot allow Iran to bide more time by talking even as the centrifuges keep spinning,” he said. “Iran’s leaders must understand that unless they change their course, their situation will only get worse. Their pursuit of nuclear weapons capabilities will make them less, not more, secure.”

Newsday Reports: Once again, East Ramapo stands alone as the only Rockland County school district to vote down its proposed budget. The vote tallies for East Ramapo were released early Wednesday morning, hours after the seven other districts finished counting.

“I am very upset. We worked very hard on getting this budget passed and we got very close and it was voted down,” East Ramapo school board president Yehuda Weissmandl said in an email. “Once again this reminds me that the board adopts a budget and presents it to the voters, but in the end the voters decide if we should have the budget or not.”

East Ramapo’s budget fell 5,400-4,895, according to district clerk Cathy Russell. The nearly $210 million proposal would have cut more than 60 positions and is at the state tax levy limit with a 3.1 percent increase.

In 2012, only the East Ramapo’s district’s budget was rejected at the Rockland County polls. This is the fourth-straight year the proposed budget has been voted down.

Among those in attendance at the Crain’s New York Business debate in Midtown were Sal Albanese, John Liu, Christine Quinn and Bill Thompson.

When asked by the forum moderator whether Weiner is qualified to be mayor based on temperament and experience, most tried to steer the conversation back to their own candidacies.

“I think that is going to be up to the people of the City of New York as they judge all of us during the election season so it isn’t for me to say,” Thompson said.

“Honestly I won’t be voting for him,” said Liu. “But I think it is also necessary to look at the record, the background.”

“I’m the only one who served with Anthony Weiner. I was on the City Council with him. And he’s just another career politician that’s, basically, got some additional quirks,” Albanese said.

“What I think the voters are really concerned about is making sure that the next mayor is someone who isn’t just gonna make promises, is somebody who actually has had a record during their career in government or their career in the private sector of actually delivering for New Yorkers,” Quinn said.

The one Democrat not in attendance at the breakfast forum was Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. However, he did take a bit of a swipe at Weiner in a profile piece published Wednesday in the New York Times.

In it, he noted the one-time Forest Hills resident has since moved to a “elegant apartment on Park Avenue”, suggesting he has perhaps gotten away from his working class outer borough roots.

NYMag Reports: Joe Biden spoke last night in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month. Biden has long, deep ties to the Jewish community — Obama actually picked him in 2008 in part to reassure skittish Jewish Democrats. Biden indeed offered fulsome, heartfelt praise in his remarks, before wandering into highly uncomfortable terrain and delivering a speech that is likely to be quoted by anti-Semites for years and decades to come. (It’s already the subject of excited discussion among the white supremacist community.)

Said Biden:

The Jewish people have contributed greatly to America. No group has had such an outsized influence per capita as all of you standing before you, and all of those who went before me and all of those who went before you …

You make up 11 percent of the seats in the United States Congress. You make up one-third of all Nobel laureates …

“The truth is that Jewish heritage, Jewish culture, Jewish values are such an essential part of who we are that it’s fair to say that Jewish heritage is American heritage,” Biden said during a speech at a Jewish American Heritage Month reception hosted by the Democratic National Committee at the American Institute of Architects building in Washington.

“The Jewish people have contributed greatly to America. No group has had such an outsized influence per capita as all of you standing before you, and all of those who went before me and all of those who went before you,” according to a transcript of his speech posted on Politico.

Biden pointed to American television sitcom Will and Grace – whose protagonists are a gay lawyer and his Jewish best friend – alongside social media, as examples of game-changing factors in the battle for gay marriage rights. “That’s what changed peoples’ attitudes,” Politico quoted him as saying. “That’s why I was so certain that the vast majority of people would… rapidly embrace gay marriage.”

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, announced Tuesday that his organization will collect donations and distribute them to the American Red Cross and others on the ground in Oklahoma.

“We are numb with grief, and yet inspired by the heroic resilience of the people of Oklahoma,” Jacobs said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those impacted by this horrific tragedy.

“As other needs arise, perhaps including volunteers to assist with the clean-up and rebuilding, we stand ready to help in any way possible.”

The Jewish Federations of North America also has started a fund to aid the relief effort of the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City.

“Our hearts go out to all those who were in the path of this disaster and who are grieving the loss of their loved ones,” said Michael Siegal, chair of the JFNA Board of Trustees. “This was a terrible tragedy. The destruction of an elementary school filled with students and teachers was especially painful.”

“Thank you Los Angeles — the hard work begins but I am honored to lead this city for the next four years,” Garcetti, 42, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday morning. “Let’s make this a great city again.”

His opponent, Wendy Greuel, did not immediately issue a statement. But the Los Angeles Times reported that she called Garcetti early Wednesday to concede.

Garcetti, a city councilman, received 54% of the 337,000 votes cast; Greuel got the other 46%, figures from the City Clerk’s Office show.

Garcetti’s mother is Jewish, and his father, Gil, the former district attorney whose office lost in the O.J. Simpson murder trial in the 1990s, is of Mexican and Italian descent. “I always felt myself to be Jewish and Latino very comfortably,” Garcetti told the Jewish Journal during the campaign. “Weekends were both filled with bowls of menudo and lots of bagels.”

Voters in the East Ramapo Central School District decided on a $209.9 million Budget proposal which would mean a 3.13% property Tax Hike. In addition, the election decided three seats on the Board of Education.

10:52: As of now it seems the Jewish Community produced about 6,500-7,000 votes vs 4,500-5,000 for the other communities.

10:57: Tax Payers candidates seem to have won the election. Neither of them are Jewish but they had strong support among Private School parents, tax payers and also among the Jewish Community.

11:16: Without New Square’s 1,200-plus votes counted, the split is about 5,100-4,500 votes, giving the budget/public school reformers a clear win to the School Board.

11:29: Budget did likely not pass but we can’t project this with certainty at this time since there was confusion on this issue in some circles.

11:53: New Square machines jammed. Hence, the wait. Without NS, “the Budget vote count is tight” says a source.

12:00: Without the New Square vote, the budget vote is about 3,100 Yes; 3,700 No. Obviously, many people voted on the candidates but not on the budget.

12:06: Hillcrest machine has a problem, showing thousands of impossible votes as per one source close to the action, but it does not change our reporting. It’s apparently related to/same issue as our 11:53 update.

12:24: the 12:00 budget numbers underestimated the total budget count. So aside the NS numbers, we are also short on budget numbers from some other Jewish precincts.

1:00: East Ramapo budget voted down: 5,400 vs 4,895. It’s perhaps one of the slimmest margins seen in years, which also explains our 11:29 update.

1:07: NS had about 1,500 votes.

1:08: In percent, the budget was defeated by a 52.5.%-47.5% margin.

1:36: Charles won his sea by a 6,768-5,5134 margin; Germain by a 6,539-5,035 margin, and Maraluz Corado by a 6,746-5,194 margin.

1,300 voters who backed the tax payer’s team did not vote down the budget.

The Army Corps of Engineers has issued a letter saying it intends to evaluate the extent of environmentally protected wetlands amid the 206 acres along the route 202-306 corridor outside Pomona.

“Based on our latest review … it appears that (builder) Scenic Development has proposed work in wetlands and/or waters … that may require a Department of the Army permit,” the agency said in a May 16 letter.

“However, until a jurisdictional determination is prepared and approved by the Corps of Engineers for the site, we cannot determine the extent of Corps jurisdiction at the site nor can we determine the extent of proposed work in Corps jurisdiction” for the high-density housing development, the agency wrote.

Ramapo Organized for Sustainability and a Safe Aquifer received the letter. The group has fought the Patrick Farm project in court, filing several legal actions against Scenic Development of Monsey and the town.

Suzanne Mitchell, director of ROSA, said the agency’s review “further undermines the credibility” of Ramapo, which has “collaborated in the developer’s attempts to railroad the planning process before the project’s wetland impacts are understood.”
